While the current wave of Covid-19 in the US is showing signs of slowing down, concerns are rising among health authorities due to the emergence of a new Covid variant known as XEC, especially with the approach of colder weather. This recombinant strain, a combination of two closely related variants named KS.1.1 and KP.3.3, both descendants of the JN.1 strain, is showing potential for widespread transmission across the US. With numerous additional mutations, XEC is thought to be more transmissible than previous strains, indicating that Covid-19 is far from disappearing as new variants continue to emerge. Here are 6 key points to know about the new Covid variant XEC:1. Increased InfectiousnessExperts suggest that the new Covid-19 variant XEC, which has multiple additional mutations, is more infectious than earlier strains. Adherence to social distancing and proper hygiene practices is crucial to prevent infections.2. Global SpreadThe XEC variant, originating in Germany, is spreading rapidly in countries such as the US, UK, and China, with reported cases in 27 countries, including Poland, Norway, Luxembourg, Ukraine, and Portugal. The US has confirmed 23 cases, including three in California.3. Mild SymptomsAll new variants stemming from Omicron, including XEC, exhibit similar mild symptoms such as fever or chills, cough, sore throat, runny nose, loss of taste or smell, difficulty breathing, muscle and body aches, headache, nausea, and diarrhea.4. Vaccine EffectivenessThe current Covid-19 vaccine is designed based on the KP.2 strain of the virus. However, the virus is evolving faster than vaccine updates, raising uncertainties about the efficacy of the latest vaccine. Nonetheless, the vaccine may still offer protection against severe illness and hospitalization for vulnerable populations.5. Potential Dominance in WinterExperts warn that XEC could potentially become the dominant variant during winter months, urging heightened vigilance and precautionary measures.Eric Topol, director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute in La Jolla, suggested that a particular variant is most likely to become predominant and spread more rapidly in the coming months. This variant is expected to gain traction and become widespread.

Regarding the variants that create the recombinant XEC, it is a fusion of KS.1.1 and KP.3.3 strains, both of which are derived from the JN.1 strain. KS.1.1 is part of the FLiRT variants contributing to the rising number of cases globally, while KP.3.3 is a type of FLuQE variant with a spike protein mutation that enhances its binding efficiency to human cells.

To prevent Covid infection, it is essential to adhere to basic practices such as avoiding large gatherings, maintaining a safe distance, frequent hand washing, and wearing masks in crowded places. It is also advisable to strengthen immunity naturally by consuming a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, and protein.
